Sandra Ann McDaniels, age 88, passed away unexpectedly after a brief hospitalization, the morning of Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in Grand Rapids.
Sandra was born May 16, 1937, to George and Ann (Kooyers) Scholtens in Muskegon, Michigan. Sandra was the youngest of four children and is survived by her brother, Robert Scholtens, 96, of Knoxville, Tennessee and sister, Jane Scholtens, 91, of Grand Rapids, beloved nieces and a nephew. She is preceded in death by her brother, Paul Scholtens, of Portland, Oregon, sisters-in-law, Maureen Scholtens and Irene Scholtens.
After graduating from Muskegon Heights High School in 1955, she attended Hackley Nursing school for a year. She was then married to Robert Hommes for 23 years. They had three daughters who survive her. Lynne (Scott) Grinwis of Grand Rapids and their two sons and three granddaughters; Eric (Alex) Grinwis and daughters Joni and Frances of Norton Shores; Adam (Morgan) Grinwis and daughter Hallie, with one on the way, of Grand Rapids. Jill (Shawn) MacDougall of Rockford and their two sons; Patrick MacDougall (Torie Haner) of Washington, Utah; Evan MacDougall of Rockford. Kathy (Tim) Tabor of Spring Lake and their three children and two granddaughters; Ann (Joshua) Cudney and daughter Emma of Spring Lake; Stephanie Tabor and daughter Logan LeClaire of Norton Shores; Robert “Thomas” Tabor of Spring Lake.
After moving to Grand Rapids in 1981 and starting a small business, The Great Frame Up, she met Thomas “Tom” McDaniels, whom she married on January 11, 1986. Tom McDaniels survives her as well as his son, David McDaniels of Grand Rapids. Tom’s daughter Martha (Mike) Kroll preceded Sandra in death; Mike and Martha’s daughter Emily (Joshua) Wilford, have two children, Jordan and Samuel, of Grand Rapids. Tom and Sandy’s years together included boating, traveling, involvement in their community as they lived in and restored “the white house by the Ada covered bridge” and building their home in Cascade where they have lived for the last 17 years. Their devotion to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren occupied so much of their lives. Tom and Sandy were always present for milestone moments to give their love and support.
Sandra was characterized by her talent for design, hospitality, and cooking. She used these talents in her loving and good-natured way by planning family gatherings and making meals to bring comfort to others. She enjoyed her hobby of Mahjong for many years as well and was a loyal friend to those in her group. Sandra was a loving matriarch to her entire family and will be greatly missed. She was one-of-a-kind. After such a long and happy life, there is comfort as she reassured us that she was ready to go, spiritually and physically.
Please join us for a memorial service on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Cascade Christian Church “Chapel” 2829 Thornapple River Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 11:30 a.m. followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall.
