Steven R. Thompson passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022 in Spring Lake, MI. He was born April 26, 1941 in Dayton (Montgomery), Ohio to Charles and Neva Thompson. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, OH, with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Steve then served as a Captain and Air Traffic Controller in the United States Air Force. While stationed at the Port Austin Air Base, he met his late wife, Shari Morell Thompson. The two were married on April 12, 1969. Steve is survived by his sisters Gay Linz (Ernie Linz) and Janet Brown (Ed Brown). He is also survived by his nephew Jeff Brown (Ardith Brown), their two children Noel and Neva, nephews, J. Barry Holdship (Deborah Holdship), William G. Holdship, his niece Gigi H. Van Erp (Jeffrey Van Erp), and their three children, Nicholas, Alexander, & Mia. Steve worked at Kawneer Corporation as a salesman and lived in Peoria, Illinois for most of his life until moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan to be close to family.
“Unc”, as most of us called him, loved to talk about politics and history. One of his favorite hobbies was collecting trains and going to train shows. He also enjoyed smoking a fine cigar, reading books, going to the racetrack, and telling a good story. His love and wisdom will be forever missed. Visitation will be held Friday, September 16, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and funeral services held on Saturday, September 17, at 11:00 am at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
