Suzanne Miriam Karsen (nee Chidsey), 82, a devoted wife, compassionate social worker, and history enthusiast, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and deep appreciation for the stories that shape our lives.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Wethersfield, Suzanne’s love for learning guided her throughout life. She earned her History degree from Grove City College in 1965, then immersed herself in the culture of New York City before moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1978 with her beloved husband, Jim.
Her dedication to helping others led her to pursue a Master’s in Social Work at Grand Valley State University, launching a 25-year career in medical social work. Her passion for history and storytelling made her an engaged docent at the Meyer May House and Voigt House.
Suzanne spent 27 years in Heritage Hill, treasuring music—especially opera—books, travel, and thoughtful conversation. Though Grand Rapids became home, her New York flair remained unmistakable. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a dedicated member of Central Reformed Church, serving as an Elder and choir member.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Miriam and Edmund Chidsey; husband, Jim; sisters, Patricia Coakley and Frederica (“Ricky”) Langeland; and lifelong friend, John Miller. She is lovingly remembered by her stepchildren, Doug (Cathy), Mimi (Tim), Tim (Denise), and Leah (John); her seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and her sister Carol Marunas and her brother-in-law, Richard (Inger) Karsen.
Suzanne’s life was a testament to the power of curiosity, compassion, and community. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Celebration of Sue’s life will be held 2pm on Thursday, June 12 at the Terrace Chapel of Holland Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Corewell Health Hospice.
