Suellen Engel, age 72, of Grand Rapids passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Throughout her battle, she participated in several clinical trials that will help many others in the future. Suellen was born on June 26, 1952 to Marcia (Sherwood) and Cornelius Frens. She graduated from Creston High School in 1970. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 51 years, Richard. She is also survived by her children Jill (Adam) Ott and Rich (Jenny) Engel, and her beloved grandchildren, Owen, Myles, Eisele, and Wyatt; as well as her sister Karen (Kelly) Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Frens. Suellen was a talented seamstress, often making Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren as well as dress up clothes and beautiful quilts she often gifted to others. She enjoyed hosting meals for her extended family, mastering her recipes for barbecue ribs and famous potato salad. Suellen and Richard shared a love of muscle cars and traveled the country showing their own. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and their friends. Most of all, she loved being a mother and grandmother - her greatest joy. The family will receive friends at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 4 to 7p.m. on Wednesday, October 9. A rosary will be said at 6:30. The Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, October 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1120 4 Mile Rd NE, with Fr. Tom Cavera officiating. The family would like to thank the staff at Faith Hospice and The Oaks at Belmont. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice or the Hospice of their choice.
