Walter Lockwood Obituary

Walter Lee Lockwood, age 84, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026.

Walter was born in St. Joseph, Michigan on August 2, 1941, to parents Leon and Betty Lockwood. The eldest of six children, he graduated top of his class at South High School before continuing his education at Michigan State University and later at Indiana University. While at MSU, he developed a passion for literature and creative writing which would ultimately shape his life and career.

A gifted writer, Walter built a distinguished career as an educator, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, historian and essayist. He earned national recognition for his screenplays, most notably for the HBO film Finnegan, Begin Again, starring Robert Preston and Mary Tyler Moore. The film received widespread praise and earned an ACE Award, shedding the spotlight on his thoughtful and deeply human storytelling. He also wrote screenplays and teleplays for productions including Runaway Heart, Battling for Baby, and Indiscreet, among others.

As an author, Walter published numerous novels, short story collections, essays and nonfiction works. His published works include Jones Unbound, The Green Room, Drinking with Dead Friends and Other Stories, Magic in the World and Other Stories, Light and Dark and Other Stories, and many additional works spanning over five decades. He also authored Open Door, a historical account of Grand Rapids Community College, where he taught in the English department for 36 years, preserving an important part of the institution’s legacy.

Walter’s creative contributions also extended to the stage. He wrote and supported local theatre productions, documentary projects and literary programs, always championing the arts and encouraging emerging writers and artists. Friends and family knew him as someone who was constantly creating: notebooks within reach, books piled high, and stories continuously taking shape.

Despite his many accomplishments, Walter’s greatest joy was his family.

He is survived by his wife, Pam Lockwood; his children, Alison (Ben) Lantz, Matt (Debbie) Lockwood, Susan Lockwood, and Katie Lockwood. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Ian Lockwood. He was the grandfather of Max Lockwood, Ryan (Lauren) Manning, Maggie (Mick) Spann, Grace Haynes, Zoe Haynes, Alec (Madison) Lockwood, Avery Lockwood, Jack Lockwood, Gabe Lantz, Hannah Lantz and Aubrey Lantz, and great grandfather of Sophia, Amara, Camila, Monroe and Macklin. Walter is survived by his siblings, Jim (Linda) Lockwood, Doug Lockwood, Bruce (Tina) Lockwood, Jeannie (Brian) Harris, and Susie (Bruce) Bradley, along with many extended family members, dear friends, former students and colleagues whose lives he touched over the years.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Walter lived a life rooted in faith, family, and community. When he retired in 2001, he took on a new role by homeschooling daughters Susan and Katie with his wife Pam. Of all the chapters in his life as an educator, one of the most meaningful was the season he and his wife spent teaching their daughters together. Walter enjoyed cultivating his English-style garden, golfing, reading, sipping brandy, and spending time with family gathered together. He also served his church, Third Reformed, in many roles, particularly as elder, head of adult education, and gardener. He was an avid sports fan who rarely missed an opportunity to attend his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

Walter will be remembered for his intelligence, creativity, subtle humor, and kinship with nature. Though he cherished time with close friends and family, he was a naturally solitary soul who found spiritual meaning in the transcendental union of God and nature. Whether through his teaching, writing, faith, he imparts a legacy that will continue to inspire. To quote his novel Jones Unbound (1973), pieces of him “are now scattered throughout the globe in the heads of students.” In many ways, we were all his students, and his spirit will continue to awaken creativity in those whose lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 2:00 pm at his church home of many years, Third Reformed, 2060 Michigan Street NE Grand Rapids, MI. A special reception will be held following the service, during which time refreshments will be served. The Rev. Jeffrey Petersen and the Rev. Olivia Stewart-Shoemaker, Walter’s dear friends, will preside. Memorial contributions may be made to Third Reformed Church, North End Community Ministries, or Grand Rapids Community College.
