William E. “Bill” Kincaid, MD, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2020 at Porter Hills Retirement Community at the age of 95.
Bill was born August 19, 1924 in Parkersburg, West Virginia and throughout his life he spoke very fondly of growing up there. After high school he attended West Virginia University and then went on to Medical College of Virginia, graduating with a medical degree in 1948. After interning at Ohio Valley General Hospital he enlisted in the US Army Medical Corp. He was stationed in Salzburg, Austria until 1953. Upon his return he did a residency in Radiology at Case Western Reserve Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that he met and married Sue Anne Beale of Warren, Ohio in 1956.
Bill and Sue moved to Grand Rapids, MI in 1958 where they raised their four children. Bill practiced medicine in the Radiology Department of Butterworth Hospital and established the Nuclear Medicine Department there. He remained at Butterworth until his retirement in 1990.
He also had a number of other interests. From an early age he was an avid fisherman, primarily fly fishing. He enjoyed tying his own flies as well as traveling and exploring many rivers and streams with fly fishing friends and family. He loved music, in particular classical and choral music, and spent a lot of time “conducting” and harmonizing. He also played tennis for many years, enjoyed woodworking, and spending time at his cabin. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a past delegate for the Michigan State Medical Society, and served on the board of Porter Hills for many years.
Bill was a truly wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will long be remembered for his big personality, his great sense of humor, including his jokes, cliches and witty comments and his contagious laugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue in 2014, and his brother-in-law, Paul Beale.
He will be greatly missed by his children, Beth (Stuart) Hegseth of Tarpon Springs, FL, Peg (Tim) Wilcox of Petoskey, MI, Jim (Beth) Kincaid of Muskegon, MI, and Tom (Ana) Kincaid of Madrid, Spain, as well as his 8 grandchildren, Erin, Carly, Claire, Cam, Tyler, Emma, Bruno, and Sofia.
