With deep sorrow, we announce that William Ernest Leidel of Grand Rapids, Michigan, passed away peacefully in his home on October 26, 2025 at the age of 85. Born in January of 1940, Bill lived a life grounded on dedication, loyalty, integrity, service to others, and his Lutheran faith.
Bill was the beloved husband of Merilyn Leidel for 62 years. They met during their years at Hofstra College in Hempstead, New York. Together, they built their lives centered on love, family and faith. They traveled far and wide. Among their in-country destinations was Alaska, the Western National Parks, and most of the eastern seaboard. Venturing internationally, they built beautiful memories while exploring approximately 15 different countries.
Bill was an active volunteer, making impactful and meaningful differences in people’s lives. From being a scout master in the Boy Scouts of America to serving in the Kairos prison ministry, directly ministering to prisoners and ministering to those growing in their faith. When not volunteering, Bill would spend hours playing the piano, listening to classical music, reading historical books or magazines, and watching the amazing wildlife that would visit outside of his house. He was also very active at every church he was a member of, most recently, Trinity Lutheran in Grand Rapids.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his two sons and spouses, William and Kim; Craig and Shannon; and 12 grandchildren: Lauren (and husband Clay) Vanderwerff, Caleb, Joshua, Fr. Samuel, Anne (and husband Ryan) Teves, Charles, Mary Claire, Kathleen, John, Virginia, Evelyn, and Thomas; 1 great-grandchild, Keira; his siblings, Warren (and wife Helen) and Roger (and wife Gail), Jonathan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edith Leidel.
A Memorial service will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 Fulton Street, Grand Rapids, MI 49506 with visitation one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00am. A light luncheon will follow the service.
May he rest in the eternal peace of God’s loving embrace.
