Debbie, I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Shumaker's passing. He was very kind to Mike and I and we had the utmost respect for him. Over the years, we laughed, we argued and we cried but I always felt like we were friends. Although we lost touch after the move to Grand Rapids I would think of both of you often, especially during Lions season. He will be missed. Take care of you Debbie.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Shumaker. I refer to him as Dr. Shumaker because he deserves the respect. I worked with Dr.Shumaker at Oakwood Hospital. My co-workers and myself had nothing but respect for him as he treated us all the same.... as human beings. Often, Dr. Shumaker would reserve the auditorium after hours and do presentations for us technologists. He worked hard to broaden our knowledge of computed tomography and for that I am truly grateful. He will be missed. His family has our condolences.

Dear Debbie and Family,
It is with a very heavy heart that I feel compelled this evening to write to you regarding the passing of Dan.
I met Dan at Oakwood Hospital where he was a Radiologist in the Ct Dept. I was employed by GE Medical and my job was to maintain the CT System there for the Hospital. One evening I was struggling to find an artifact on the Ct when Dan walked by, looking at the image I had displayed for troubleshooting purposes he suggested to me that it might be beam hardening. Well after an hour of discussing beam hardening I went back to work and removed the x-ray tube from the CT System. Following that I removed the lead covering over the glass port and found the glass, where the x-ray beam came out of the tube was covered with Tungsten. The anode was made from Tungsten and had begun to disintegrate and collected on the glass window. This attenuated the beam, resulting beam hardening. Replacing the tube solved the artifact issue with the CT System.
That was the beginning relationship that went for the next 20 or so years. During those years we had many discussions regarding CT imaging. Then MRI came along, our discussions continued regarding MRI imaging. It was not always work related either. Many times we discussed boating and Salmon Fishing. Dan was just getting into Salmon, where I had been it for few years prior. ( I was fishing when Dan had dedicated his time to Medical School ) Today, I look at the success I had in my career and can attribute a great deal of it was the result of the discussions I had with Dan. He was a very intelligent man and would always be up for good discussion and in some cases, a debate!
I think one of his best qualities was the way he felt about his family. For that reason, I always had a great deal of respect for him. We would talk about our kids, as they were growing up and some of the experiences we shared. Would they go to college and if so, what would they major in? When the boys started showing up, like you and Dan, we were raising two girls.
From Oakwood Hospital, to Wyandotte, Heritage, and Southshore, it would always make my day to run into Dan! We lost contact after your move to Grand Rapids, but the intentions were always there to keep in touch. The last email exchange we had was 4 years ago, just before I retired. Dan’s last lines were for us, to stay in touch.
Please accept our condolences for the loss of your dear husband and your daughters’ father.
He was truly a great man!
Sincerely,
Suzanne and Bob Moran
