James R. Wierenga, born in Grand Rapids on Sept. 3, 1957, son of Bob and Jackie, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Nov. 3, 2017. Survived by his wife Deb, children Jimmy (Gia) Wierenga, Lindsey (Scott) Dempster, stepdaughters Alison Carter, and Erica (Zia) Shook and beloved grandchildren Landon Dempster and Nova Shook, siblings Karen Jones, Dave (Kathy), Julie (Tim) Davis, Tom (Nancy), and Bob (Mary) and many nieces, nephews and a grand niece. Jim served in the US Army from 1975-1978 as a medic in Germany, then returned home and graduated from GVSU as a safety engineer. Jim worked at Medtronic as a safety engineer, then at Cancer & Hematology as a medical assistant until he retired due to physical disability. Jim enjoyed family life, especially at Glen Lake, traveling, was an avid reader and loved discussing military history. He also enjoyed collecting WWII memorabilia and model trains.
Funeral services will be held 2pm Wednesday at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Chapel. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday from 1-2pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project or Habitat for Humanity.
